Bigotry is a two-edged sword

Convention ends with Satan and immigrants PDF | Print | E-mail
CALEB WARNOCK - Daily Herald

Utah County Republicans ended their convention on Saturday by debating Satan's influence on illegal immigrants.

The group was unable to take official action because not enough members stuck around long enough to vote, despite the pleadings of party officials. The convention was held at Canyon View Junior High School.

Don Larsen, chairman of legislative District 65 for the Utah County Republican Party, had submitted a resolution warning that Satan's minions want to eliminate national borders and do away with sovereignty.

In a speech at the convention, Larsen told those gathered that illegal immigrants "hate American people" and "are determined to destroy this country, and there is nothing they won't do."

Illegal aliens are in control of the media, and working in tandem with Democrats, are trying to "destroy Christian America" and replace it with "a godless new world order -- and that is not extremism, that is fact," Larsen said.

At the end of his speech, Larsen began to cry, saying illegal immigrants were trying to bring about the destruction of the U.S. "by self invasion."

Republican officials then allowed speakers to defend and refute the resolution. One speaker, who was identified as "Joe," said illegal immigrants were Marxist and under the influence of the devil. Another, who declined to give her name to the Daily Herald, said illegal immigrants should not be allowed because "they are not going to become Republicans and stop flying the flag upside down. ... If they want to be Americans, they should learn to speak English and fly their flag like we do."

Senator Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, spoke against the resolution, saying Larsen, whom he called a "true patriot and a close friend," was embarrassing the Republican Party.

"I agree with 95 percent of this resolution but it has some language that is divisive and not inspiring other people to its vision," he said. "This only gives fodder to the liberal media to give negative attention to the Republican Party."

Joel Wright, a member of the Cedar Hills City Council, was booed as he opposed the resolution.

"This might be the most divisive issue in the Republican Party," he said. "I support President Bush but he needs to support this issue harder."

When Wright said "the economic benefit (of illegal immigration) outweighs the downside" he was jeered. He warned that the Republican Party of California had "killed themselves" by taking a hostile stance against illegal aliens.

He also said the LDS Church has studied the issue and tried to determine whether illegal aliens could be given temple recommends and allowed to serve missions but "gave up" because the issue was too complex. He ended by saying "President Bush needs to fix this now" and was booed again.

Larsen was allowed to finish the debate with a one-minute speech.

"If the Democrats take over the country, we will be dead, and we will have abortion and partial-birth abortion and the Republican Party will go into extinction," he said. "Nancy Pelosi and the ACLU would oppose this (resolution)."

A member of the audience moved that the convention suspend its rules to allow the "objectionable part" of Larsen's resolution to be stricken, retaining only the final paragraphs of the resolution, which condemn illegal immigration. Eventually party officials counted all delegates in attendance, only to discover that, with 299, they were about 30 short of a quorum and could take no action.

"I did ask people to stay so we could have this discussion," said Senator Curt Bramble, R-Provo, who chaired the convention. Bramble had earlier asked those gathered not to thwart a discussion on the resolution, saying it would be "good for the party."

In other business, those gathered voted against removing some of the party's leadership.

Letters supporting the re-election of party chairwoman Marian Monnahan and secretary Susan Bramble were mailed in envelopes bearing the party's return address, causing delegate Russell Sias to demand they be removed from office. A spokesperson for Alexander's Print Advantage, which handled the mailing, spoke at the convention, saying employees had mistaken put the address on the envelopes and the company took full responsibility for the snafu.

In a speech, Enid Greene, state Republican Party chair, announced to applause that she will remarry in a few months. Greene's first marriage came to an infamous end during her tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives when her husband, Joe Waldholtz, who was her campaign manager, was charged with embezzling. He eventually pled guilty to campaign fraud and other charges.

Greene said she was disappointed in BYU professors who protested Dick Cheney's visit to campus, calling them "self-appointed intellectuals."

"I'm not calling for BYU to fire them but if no one signs up for their classes ..." she said. "If they say the Vice President doesn't have anything to say we want to hear, I'm not interested in having my daughter learn from them."

All of the speakers praised those gathered. Lt. Governor Gary Herbert said Utah County Republicans are "guided by correct principles" and are the "best of the best" of the Republican Party.

Bramble assailed those who would called the local Republican Party "broken," saying the party was accountable and accomplishing good work, including the approval of school vouchers and granting UVSC university status.

Congressman Chris Cannon and Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff both received a standing ovation from some members of the audience. Cannon said Democrats have just as many corrupt party members as the Republicans but the media does not report Democratic ethics violations.

Shurtleff said that while Americans are divided on the war in Iraq, Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson should not refer to President Bush as a war criminal.

I agree with Senator Stephenson. Stuff like this makes me embarrassed to live in Utah County and is one of the reasons I voted straight ticket Democrat for all county positions. (I'm a registered Republican). I think they're afraid that the illegals are going to run off with their daughters and take them back to their harem in Mexico. Holy Cow!!! I think maybe Rosanne Barr has a point now.

Who are the Champions of Tolerance?

I'm sure you guys are getting really sick of me hammering this issue home, but that's ok, I'm going to do this post anyway so there. How do ya like them apples? As the congregation sang "In Humility, Our Savior" this week in Sacrament meeting, I paused on the line "fill our hearts with sweet forgiving; teach us tolerance and love". I was contemplating how I need to forgive the enemies of the church, because it doesn't really matter what they say or what kind of lies they propagate, the Savior will be victorious in the end! I was telling myself I need to forgive people like Rosie O'Donnell and try to love them. Just when I thought I got myself to that point, Rosanne Barr calls Mitt Romney the "Devil himself." She didn't stop there it only got worse. It was so outlandish that I was laughing the whole way through it.
Reading her diatribe, its clear that homosexuality is the issue that kindled her anger, causing her to abandon reason and truthfulness. She made a lot of wild and irresponsible allegations. I think its obvious that she is extremely ill-informed or extremely dishonest, but if its not to some, how do we know who is right? Galatians says that the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, and faith and Ephesians says that they are goodness, righteousness and truth. These traits incidentally together comprise true tolerance, not the tolerance that is a modern euphemism for "love the sin, pretend to love the sinner and despise the good."
For those who might be wondering what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints REALLY teaches about homosexuality and not what Rosanne says the church teaches, here it is in a nutshell:
"We encourage Church leaders and members to reach out with love and understanding to those struggling with these issues. Many will respond to Christlike love and inspired counsel as they receive an invitation to come back and apply the atoning and healing power of the Savior (see Isa. 53:4–5; Mosiah 4:2–3)."
These qualities are all fruits of the spirit as told in Galatians and hence true tolerance. If we read the things that Rosanne said, there is not an ounce of true tolerance or is there seemingly ever in Hollywood or in mankind these days.
"By their fruits shall ye know them"
I hope people are thinking about these things before they take Hollywood's word for it when they say "tolerance, tolerance, tolerance". If they say it enough, amazingly somehow it sticks, but people rarely stop to think "are they really tolerant?" Its amazing to me how little meaning there really is behind the words.
They say love, love, love, but what they mean is selfish lust.
They say tolerance when they mean, agree with us and we'll accept you.
They say happiness when they really mean fleeting excitment and longterm misery.
Examine the lack of meaning behind the words and you'll be suprised at how shallow this world really is and how profound the Gospel of Jesus Christ is.

Roseanne Barr's Comments

Its difficult to even allow this diatribe on my blog. It is without a doubt the biggest crock of lies I have ever seen in my life. Wow! Anyone that knows anything about the religion will know this. Every single sentence in there is obscenely wrong, so wrong that I don't even find it necessary to dispute. It discredits itself. All I can say is that if you google "Rosanne Barr" and "Mental Illness" you get a plethora of hits and I'm sure that is where this rant stems from. I'm sorry Rosanne that you are so mislead. If you would turn to Jesus Christ, I know your mind would be healed greatly and it would be enlightened. The Lord loves you and "Mormons" are your brothers and sisters even if you have forgotten.

This was taken from Rosanne Barr's blog at http://www.roseanneworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2346 and was posted January 5, 2007:

Let's turn our attentions to the following, instead of faulting each other.....

Mitt Romney is the devil himself, and the church has been working for forty years to elect one of its own to the highest office of this country, while trying to keep things hush hush about its practices of plural and child marriage... mitt romney's temple vows are to uphold plural (child) marriage in heaven, even if prevented from doing so on earth. These are the people who oppose gay marriage too, by the way, I believe as a red herring to keep their own version of 72 virgins in heaven (multiple wives) out of the public eye. They began their anti gay marriage drive when women polygamists starting speaking up about the reality of living in Utah and Wyoming and anywhere else in the west where mormons rule. I believe they oppose gay marriage because the term CONSENTING ADULTS would be in its definition, thereby committing to law that to marry a MINOR would for once be a punishable infraction in Mormon held states. Mormons still want to marry their youngest nieces, ( age 8 ) exactly like their taliban twins do. The Mormons are the most fundamental of all the fundamentalists on earth.. they put the MENTAL in fundamental...Only fifteen years ago they agreed that blacks are human and they still think that all jews need to die to bring christ's return... a horrifying hoax of a crusade against islam and judaism, and actually christianity too... they own almost all of ITT, almost every insurance company in america, and thousands upon thousands of companies that give money to anti-feminist anti democratic groups in this country and around the world. Their worst nightmare is equality and birth control for women. They believe that they are called to "save" America from jews, gays, and leftists. They gave the most money to the evangelical movement, which was spawned by their experiments on gay boys at byu in the 60-70's...watch clockwork orange, this is what they did to gay boys... and they also kick out their gay sons at age 13 to live on the streets, where a large majority end up as child prostitutes..(according to some of them, their biggest clientele is Mormon men).. It is the sickest thing on this earth, and if that was not enough, most of the aryan nations and american nazi movements are manned by mormons too.

Spread the mitt romney word, because it will really be too late if he is allowed to go mainstream any more than he has already.

Where do I even start with this one? I guess all I can do is remember Roseanne in my prayers and consider the reasons Tom Arnold left her.
